My apologies for the tardiness of this review, I read this shortly before traveling to England for a week, so my reviews got put to the side. Not one to leave an Author hanging, I wanted to get this out there as quickly as possible. Sorry, Kev.
This was a one-sitting read, logging in at only 50 pages, it couldn’t have been anything else, and the story here fits perfectly with Demain’s “Short sharp shocks!” range – the ending happens in a way I hadn’t anticipated.
I won’t give you many details, given the book’s length, but I can say that all of the elements are in here will attract readers and fans of Kev’s previous work – realistic characters, smooth organic dialogue, a mystery, procedural investigation, and a conclusion that has elements of the supernatural and humanity entwined. You get to the end and though the finale goes off on a tangent I hadn’t predicted, it still entertained and got me satisfied with a bite-sized offering from Kev. Could I have read more? Yes. Could it have been extended for another 20 pages or so? Yes, probably. Would that have detracted from the premise? Also - Yes. I think in fairness, Kev called it right here. It left me wanting more, and I fear if it had been 20 pages longer, it would have felt drawn out. Good call.
This gets a four out of five ⭐ ‘s from me. This felt like a cross-genre investigative horror book and ticked many of the boxes I look for. Solid work, and an easy buy at that price.
